Honey Bee Removal

Bee removal from the side of a house

When Honey bees swarm, you may have seen the classic images of them hanging in a big mass from a tree branch, or on the side of a wall. During this time, they have other bees out, looking for a new home. When they find one, they all take off at the same time, and move into that new home. Sometimes, this is a tree or natural hollow, and sometimes, it’s in someone’s house, garage or building. Alot of the time, you may not know they are there, but other times, they cause problems and issues and need to be removed. That’s where our Honey Bee Removal service comes into action.

Honey Bee Removal Service

We’re called in alot of the time when works are due to take place on a property, and the workers don’t want to be bothered by the bees, and don’t want to bother them. This makes our job easier, as alot of the access equipment will be in place, enabling us to access the areas near the bees. Other times, its not, and we can arrange for the installation of scaffold (if needed) or cherry pickers etc.

We take care when dealing with someone’s home, to cause as little damage as possible, but still ensuring we can safely remove the bees from their current home. This may mean we need to take bricks out, remove tiles, or cut into wooden siding and ceilings. We carefully remove all the comb, honey and bees, leaving the cavity empty. This is then sometimes filled with insulation to ensure the bees don’t have the space to build a new home in there again. It also puts off any new swarms from moving in.

After everything has been removed, we put the building back as best as possible. This may mean a temporary covering if works are taking place, or having our building reinstall the bricks / tiles / wood etc.

What do we do with removed bees?

Depending on the space, and how long the bees have been there for, depends on how many bees and comb we have to remove. The time of year can also make a big difference, as late summer will see more honey in the comb.

As we remove the comb, we start to place it into beekeepers frames, so when the bees arrive at their new home, they have some of their old comb to help them make a good start, and get going with their old comb. The bees are carefully vacuumed up into a special bee box that keeps them safe. When they get to their new location, we reunite the 2, and the bees continue to thrive in a new location.

Can’t we just leave them ‘Bee’?

We often get asked if we can return the bees once the works have been completed, or if they can just be left, and all the workers wear bee suits. Unfortunately, we can’t return the same bees to the location again. However, if left open (no insulation infill) a new colony will swarm into the area.
Some people want the bees left, however this can cause issues. All the comb within there, honey and wax are a massive fire risk. After all, we all know what bees wax candles are made from. During hot weather, the honey can start to leak out, and this will penetrate through walls and ceilings within the house and cause damage.

What does Honey Bee Removal Cost?

The cost of removing a colony of honey bees from a building varies depending on the project. We advise all our customers to check their home’s insurance policy, as there is often an allowance in that for the removal of the honey bees. Typically, our pricing starts at £1350 + VAT and will vary depending on each jobs individual needs and requirements.
